Our History

The story of R.G. & G.R. Harris Funeral Home and Cremation Services began in 1910, when Robert G. Harris founded the firm after completing his formal training and apprenticeship. He was soon joined by his father, George R. Harris, a longtime manager at the Detroit Free Press. Together, they established a reputation for compassionate service and professionalism that quickly earned the trust of families throughout Detroit.

In the early years, the funeral home operated out of the historic Haste Mansion. As Detroit grew, so did the Harris firm—moving first to Cass Avenue, then later expanding to Harper Avenue to better serve families across the city. By the mid-20th century, the funeral home had become one of Detroit’s most recognized providers, known for its commitment to transparency, community education, and quality service.

Leadership eventually passed to the next generation, with Robert Harris’s son and son-in-law—Thomas L. Harris and Clarence Rost—continuing the family legacy of care. Under their guidance, the funeral home expanded again, adding locations in Livonia (1964) and Garden City (1969) to support families throughout Western Wayne County.

In later years, Thomas F. Rost, grandson of founder Robert Harris, continued the tradition of service and stewardship. Throughout his leadership and into the present day, the funeral home has remained committed to offering meaningful options for families—including cremation, memorial services, veterans honors, preplanning, and grief support—while upholding the values of compassion, integrity, and respect established more than a century ago.

Today, R.G. & G.R. Harris Funeral Home and Cremation Services continues to honor this rich history by providing trusted care to families when they need it most. It is a legacy built on service, strengthened through generations, and carried forward with the same dedication that began in 1910.
