Steven Michael Watkins, affectionately known as Papa, passed away peacefully on June 24, 2025, in Northville, Michigan, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 72 years old. Born on October 4, 1952, in Detroit, Michigan, Steven was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, whose warmth and humor touched everyone he met.
Steven grew up with a passion for the culinary arts, which led him to graduate from Schoolcraft College's culinary arts program in 1972. His remarkable talent quickly shone through as he embarked on a culinary career, beginning at The London Chophouse and later as the head chef at The Caucus Club in Detroit. Despite his success in the kitchen, Steven eventually dedicated 39 years of his life to Detroit Edison (DTE), where he forged lifelong friendships and actively participated in weekly chili cookouts, a cherished highlight of his week. In 1977, Steven married his college sweetheart, Janet Watkins, beginning a beautiful journey together that spanned nearly five decades. Together they raised three daughters, Tara, Tiffany, and Tabitha, who brought joy to his life. He was also an adored papa to four grandchildren, Dawson Reed, Gracie Reed, Emma Long, and Jack Mennerich. Steven was known for his laid-back personality, childlike whimsy and goofball charm. He often found humor where others might not, although he was usually his own biggest fan of his jokes.
Despite his reserved nature, Steven loved meeting new people and was genuinely interested in getting to know them. An avid gardener, Steven managed to cultivate the best-looking lawn on the block, showcasing his meticulous attention to detail and pride in his home. His other passions included detailing cars, fishing, riding his cherished Harley, and mall walking. However, it was classic cars that truly captured his heart, and attending the Woodward Dream Cruise each summer was an event he eagerly anticipated. He generously volunteered his time at his local church, helping with the landscaping, a task that brought him immense satisfaction and allowed him to connect with others. His willingness to extend a helping hand to neighbors further exemplified his kindness and consideration for those around him.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Lucille Watkins. Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife, Janet Watkins, and daughters Tara Reed (Jesse), Tiffany Long (Aaron), Tabitha Watkins-Mennerich (Kiel), as well as the many friends and colleagues who had the privilege of knowing him. As we gather to honor Steven's legacy, we take comfort in knowing that while he is no longer with us, he is at peace in Heaven with Jesus, free from pain and suffering. Steven will be missed dearly, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
