Mary M. Fillmore

Mary Madeline (Anderson) Fillmore, 83, went home to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Sunday, January 23, 2011, after a long and courageous fight against cancer. A loving mother and devoted wife, Mary grew up in Parrsboro, Nova Scotia, Canada and moved to Michigan when she married the love of her life, Harris Harper Fillmore, in January 1957. Over the next three years they welcomed four daughters, and she devoted her life to loving and caring for their family. After her husband's death in 1974, Mary worked at St. Mary's Hospital in Livonia, retiring in 1991. During these years she celebrated high school and college graduations with her daughters, traveled frequently to her beloved Nova Scotia to visit her family, and joyfully welcomed 4 sons-in-law, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She loved to bake…it was one of the ways she expressed her love to her family, friends, and anyone who needed a hug. Mary had a quiet inner strength borne from her faith in God which carried her through multiple episodes of cancer. Thanks to the support of a loving family, many supportive friends, and St. John Hospice, her daughters were able to have the honor and privilege of caring for their Mom at home during her final days. She leaves to celebrate her life and legacy her four daughters: Brenda (Lennie) Mailand of Grand Ledge, Lynda (Doug) Scheel of Livonia, Karen (Greg) Wright of Northville, and Sharen (Jim) Holstine of Traverse City; along with 18 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. The support and guidance of St. John Hospice, through Providence Park Novi, enabled us to provide at home care for our Mom.
