Joyce E. Szelag

Joyce Elaine Szelag (née Rosbury), age 88, passed away peacefully on October 27, 2025, in Allen Park, Michigan. Born on September 10, 1937, in Detroit, Michigan, she lived a full and vibrant life rooted in love for her family and the simple joys that brought her happiness.

Joyce was the beloved daughter of Gertrude and James Rosbury. She grew up in Detroit alongside her brothers Donald Hix and James Rosbury. Throughout her life, Joyce remained deeply connected to her family, cherishing every opportunity to bring loved ones together.

A devoted mother, Joyce leaves behind five children: Dawn Kwiecien; Donald Szelag and his wife Valerie; Lauren Dudley and her husband Patrick; Jennifer Edwards and her husband Doug; and Steven Szelag and his wife Laura. She was preceded in death by her son Jeffery Szelag.

Her legacy continues through her many grandchildren—Jeffrey, Bob, Katie, April, Jason, Nathan, Jason, Jimmy, Chris, Joe, Donnie, Eli, Shaun, Sarah, Hannah, Michael, and Samantha—as well as numerous great-grandchildren who brought immense joy to her later years. She also held a special place in the hearts of many nieces and nephews.

Joyce had a gift for creating warmth and comfort wherever she went. She especially loved hosting family gatherings where laughter filled the air and memories were made around the table. Her baking was legendary among those who knew her best—each treat crafted with care and shared generously. A passionate reader and master Scrabble player, Joyce delighted in wordplay and intellectual challenge. Her love for cats was well known among friends and family alike, as was her fondness for sunflowers—a symbol of brightness that reflected her own enduring spirit.

She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother—and as someone whose presence brought people together with kindness and grace.

A visitation will be held at the R.G. & G.R. Harris Funeral Home, 15451 Farmington Rd., Livonia, Sunday, November 2, 2025 from 1:00 - 8:00 PM with a Rosary Service at 6:30 PM.  Her Funeral Service will be held at the funeral home on Monday, November 3, 2025 at 11:00 AM followed by a Committal Service at Parkview Memorial Cemetery.
