John Curtis Burgess passed on February 2, 2026. Born and raised in Michigan, he earned a Master of Arts in counseling from Oakland University and dedicated his career to education, advising, and student support.
He spent many years in Colorado, a place he considered home, enjoying life in Durango and Denver, as well as time at his cabin in Red Feather Lakes, before returning to Michigan, where he retired from DeVry University after more than twenty years.
John was intelligent, humorous, and inherently compassionate. He had a talent for listening with empathy and purpose, offering support to others during difficult times. He loved animals and nature and valued the peace they brought to life.
He found happiness in simple pleasures - travel, spending time with family, cribbage, card games, gardening, building campfires, rollerblading, and restoring his homes. Above all, John treasured friendship and the relationships he cultivated throughout his journey.
He is survived by his mother, Jeanette Burgess; his brother, William Burgess (Danelle); his sister, Joan McNeill; his beloved niece, Olivia McNeill; many dear cousins; his cherished cats, Emmet, Grayson, Otis, and Stella; and numerous devoted friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Lloyd Burgess.
John will be remembered for his kindness, wry sense of humor, and steady presence. He will be deeply missed and forever held dear in our hearts.
